How to choose a wood planer?

The main criteria for choosing a wood planer in 2021-2022 are:

  • Power .. Motors with power consumption up to 1.6 kW are able to work only in sparing mode, with a small volume of workpieces, and need periodic rest. Models with motors with power consumption from 1.6 kW are suitable for substantial loads. If you plan to work with a wide board, it is better to choose a machine with power indicators of 2.2 kW.
  • Permissible dimensions of the workpiece. Here you should start from the size of the lumber available to you.
  • Planing depth. The depth of planing in thicknessers is considered to be 2-3 mm. The depth recommended by the manufacturer is 1-1,5 mm, which will allow high-quality work with both hardwoods and wet material.
  • Table dimensions. To work with one-meter-long workpieces the length of the working surface of 500 mm is enough. If you often work with boards up to one and a half meters long, a good option would be a machine with a table length of 771 mm.
  • Weight. This indicator will determine the possibility of installation, movement and transportation of the thicknessing machine. With a weight of up to 30 kg, the device can be used on a stable table and safely move it when necessary. Models from 40 to 50 kg are also quite mobile, but it is better to install them on mobile or stationary stands. Machines with a weight of more than 60 kg are intended exclusively for stationary installation.
  • Design features. Machines with steel frames and cast bases are considered the most durable. The presence of a planing table will align the geometry of the workpiece, compression springs - to reduce the amplitude of the backlash of moving elements. Thermal protection monitors the condition of the motor and protects it from overheating. Magnetic starter will help to prevent the machine from turning on after the appearance of voltage in the network.

My choice was between Jet and Zubr. Choice fell on the Zubr. After the purchase I looked and looked inside and was satisfied: the construction is excellent, I just greased it up a bit. Of course, it was heavy for transportation, but it stood like a monolith. The tables were adjusted correctly. When planing, the chips are magnetic and clog the outlet, I had to use a stick to drive back and forth while planing, so as not to stagnate chips (at minimum planing).

In general, Rismus "Korvet" machine is even very good, but again, it depends on what to compare with. On the merits of this machine can be noted width of the workpiece - 330 mm and track the emission of sawdust in a directly connected bag. But there the pluses, alas, end - after a couple of weeks, the stopper fell apart, the knives were disposable, and their replacement is quite difficult.

9 Rating of the expert: ? 9.2 / 10
Owner's review
In a year and a bit 12 cubic meters of wood. Started to get cheeky - knocked out the impeller and as a consequence damaged the winding. Rewound for 2000 with the impeller. For me, acceptable. From the disadvantages - weak blades. Especially the native ones. From not very good quality alloy, even magnetized bad. I don't recommend to grind OEM blades, they will shrink fast. I chose the price/quality ratio machine for personal use, and Zubr RS-320 has pleased me in this respect. It has a sturdy and reliable construction, the main parts are made of good quality metal. In work the machine is also good - it cuts relatively quickly, and the boards themselves turn out even. It is such a workhorse, maybe not the fastest, but sturdy - for a home workshop it is just right. I recommend it!

Owner's review
On the whole, Jet JWP-12 is a pretty good machine. He is relatively small, but it is fast and, so to speak, enduring - not afraid of prolonged work. Assembly is excellent, strong and reliable. However, there are some disadvantages. The main one is the native knives. The first knot and they got chipped. Also, I had to increase the length of the tables myself, especially at the output. As a result, I can recommend it, but be prepared for the fact that the machine to work will have to upgrade a little.

A popular portable machine for small jobs. Has a good ratio of lightweight motor collector-type power, high speed shaft for planing and a good rate of automatic feed blanks. The model has a well thought-out chip evacuation system, the hinged tables are of high quality and equipped with longitudinal rollers.

3. DeWALT DW733 1.8 kW

13 Expert's evaluation: ? 9.5 / 10
Owner's Review.
It is certainly a reliable and durable ruler, which cannot be compared to any of the cheaper Chinese ones. The only thing is that the plastic slider, which acts as a flat lens that enlarges and stretches the graduations on the ruler, is located at some distance from the scale. Therefore, the measurement depends on the size of the angle from which you look at this pointer. Naturally, accuracy is out of the question here.

The model, which was developed by the company for sale on the foreign market, is intended for professional use.

Equipped with two high-speed knives and has a power of 1.8 kW, the planing unit has a rigid locking, which eliminates any movement at work, even if the surface of the workpiece is uneven. The calibration of the lumber becomes accessible thanks to the convenient settings and the special planing depth limiter.

When the mains voltage increases, the power supply is cut off by the installed automatic circuit breaker. The bed of this model is cast and the frame is reinforced. Additional tables are reliably fixed and allow you to work with long workpieces without rejects, and their feed speed is 8 meters per minute.

Despite the shaft speed of 10000 revolutions per minute, the motor well withstands a heavy load and has protection against overheating.

Main features:

  • Table length/width, mm - 520/319.
  • The maximum width/depth of the workpiece, mm - 317/2.
  • Feed speed, m/min - 8.
