How to turn on the oven in a gas stove: manual and electric ignition gas

8Almost every modern gas stove is equipped with an oven. But how to ignite it - not everyone knows. And it can be done in 2 or 3 ways, depending on the model of the gas stove.

And many ovens have several burners: one for basic baking, the second - for grilling. And this is where figuring it out is going to be a lot harder.

So how do you turn on the oven in a gas stove? What ways you can do it, and which - categorically not?

How to turn on the oven in a gas stove

You should start with the main burner.

There are 2 options for ignition:

  • manual;
  • electric ignition (pieza).

2

Manual ignition

This method is universally used in all models of gas stoves (Gefest, Electrolux and other manufacturers). The essence is very simple: you need to turn on the gas supply to the burner, then - bring a lit match.

But it should be noted that in many stoves there is also a heating indicator. Accordingly, even after the burner is lit, you must hold the gas knob down for another 5 to 10 seconds. Until the temperature sensor warms up.

What is the purpose of the heat indicator? It automatically shuts off the gas supply valve if the burner in the oven goes out for any reason (heavy draught, ingress of liquid from the food being cooked, etc.).

The following rules must be followed for manual ignition:

  1. Open the oven and ventilate it for 2 to 3 minutes before turning on the igniter. All unused trays and other things (many people use the oven for storing various utensils) must be removed.
  2. Hold a hot match to the burner.
  3. Turn on the gas supply. In some gas stoves for this you just need to turn the appropriate knob. In others, you press it, then rotate it and hold it in that position. In others, it is enough to press a special button. How exactly the gas supply to the burner is turned on should be clarified in the instructions for the specific model of gas stove.
  4. After ignition, hold the knob (if it is pressed for gas supply) for another 5 - 10 seconds, until the temperature sensor (thermocouple) warms up. Some models even have a light indicator to indicate when the knob can be released.
  5. If the fire on the burner burns evenly, there are no sparks or a strange burning smell, you can close the door and leave the oven to warm up to the desired temperature.

Where exactly is the burner (igniter) located? In most models - at the bottom, under the protective metal cover. Some gas stoves have only a small hole at the bottom, where you must bring a lit match.

IMPORTANT! First you hold up the match and only then turn on the gas. Not the other way around! Otherwise, natural gas may accumulate in the oven and a small explosion will occur when the source of fire appears. But this is enough to injure and damage the gas stove itself.

And to ignite the oven manually it is recommended to use special mantel matches or a lighter with an extended nozzle.

But the use of rolled up in a tube newspaper or something similar is not recommended. Because paper leaves soot, which can later clog the burner nozzles. It may also leave an unpleasant taste on the prepared dish.

Electric ignition

Gas stoves equipped with an electric ignition are necessarily connected to the mains.

Although previously there were models, where a mechanical piezo-element was installed. That is, there was a button, which, when pressed, produced a spark. But this option - short-lived, so it was abandoned in the future.

So, in the presence of electric ignition to turn on the oven is necessary:

  1. Turn the gas tap to "maximum". In some stoves for this purpose, the knob must be turned to the stop, in others - to the middle (to be guided by the marks).
  2. Press and hold the ignition button. The corresponding "clicks" should be heard as the spark is being supplied.
  3. After the flame ignites, continue to hold the gas knob for another 5 to 10 seconds. This is to allow the temperature sensor to warm up.
IMPORTANT: If the oven fails to light from the first ignition, after 3 to 5 seconds, release the ignition button. Next - open the door. Then either open a window in the house or start the hood. This means that the oven must be ventilated before attempting to ignite it again.

If everything is done correctly, the burner is properly ignited, no sparks, no strange smell, then you can close the door and heat the oven to the desired temperature.

Varieties of electric ignition

Another nuance to consider: there are 2 types of electric ignition in gas stoves:

  1. One is a separate button.
  2. Built into the gas knob.

Separate pushbutton

As a rule, the corresponding button is located to the left or right of the knobs, by turning which the gas supply is turned on. You must first turn the knob and only then press this button.

The oven door must be open at this moment! This is to prevent a build-up of gas inside.

Built into the gas knob

Here everything is much simpler. Turning the knob immediately opens the gas supply, then automatically turns on the spark.

Note that the piezo is triggered only when the knob is in the "maximum" position (i.e. the strongest fire).

How to light the grill

Technically, the grill burner is no different. It is located, as a rule, in the upper part of the oven (sometimes slightly shifted to the side). Also you just need to bring a burning match or a lighter.

But here you still need to set the rotisserie beforehand. And immediately after ignition - turn on the mode "grill". If there is convection - it will automatically start (we are talking about the fan). In other models, the skewer is installed only with the oven door ajar.

What to do if the igniter does not work

The main reasons why the electric igniter may not work:

  • There is no power;
  • The power cable is not inserted into the socket;
  • The spark supply unit is out of order (most often the capacitor, which discharges when the button is pressed, is defective and needs to be replaced).

What to do in this case? Use manual ignition. This is technically available in all gas ovens and stoves. But you will need either mantel matches or a lighter with an extended nozzle.

Again, all you have to do is open the door and look for the burner at the bottom or top. If it is closed with a special casing, there is always a hole for ignition. By the way, the same casing in most cases can be removed (it is necessary for maintenance of the burner).

What to do if the oven goes out after ignition

The most common reasons why this happens:

  1. The gas valve is not fully open (the one next to the hose that connects the gas pipe and the stove itself). It must be checked.
  2. There is not enough air for ignition. That is why the door must be opened before doing this, and the oven itself must be thoroughly ventilated for 2 - 3 minutes.
  3. The burner is dirty. It is not recommended to attempt to clean or service it yourself. It is recommended to ask for help from specialists.
  4. The burner has been dislodged. Most often this happens after the inner chamber has been cleaned from dirt. It is necessary to check the position of the burner, if necessary - to set it correctly.
  5. Low pressure in the gas line. This can be identified by the burners of the gas stove itself. If the fire burns weakly, the problem is clearly this or a failed faucet valve. An emergency gas service representative should be contacted for assistance.
  6. The temperature sensor (thermocouple) is defective. It usually burns out after 3 to 5 years of active use. In this case, the fire will go out immediately after releasing the gas knob, even if you hold it for more than 30-40 seconds. To fix the problem you need to replace the thermocouple, i.e. you should contact a service center.
IMPORTANT! After the oven has gone out, be sure to ventilate it before attempting to ignite it again.

Precautions when using a gas stove

The following safety precautions must be followed when using a gas stove oven:

  1. When the oven door is closed, gas can build up in the oven if the burner is leaking for some reason. That is why it is necessary to ventilate the oven for 2 - 3 minutes before ignition. And using a gas stove is allowed only in a well-ventilated room (that is, if there is ventilation).
  2. When the burner is lit, it should not have "empty" areas where there is no fire. If there are, it is necessary to immediately shut off the gas supply and contact the service center to perform the cleaning. In some models it can be done by yourself (follow the algorithm in the manual).
  3. A working oven must be constantly supervised. This is the reason why there are no automatic baking programs with automatic shutoff. After all, if this function for any reason does not work (for example, the valve jams), it will lead to a fire!
  4. It is forbidden to use the oven of a gas stove for heating the room. With the door ajar, it can only be operated in one case - the grill is used. In many gas stoves, to ensure normal convection (air circulation), there is a special bar that keeps the door ajar.
  5. After each use of the oven, it is necessary to clean the inner chamber of dirt. And how exactly this is done - it is specified in the manual.
  6. If there are signs of oven malfunction or violation of gas hose connection tightness, it is strictly forbidden to use such a stove.

All in all, figuring out how to turn on the oven in a gas stove is pretty simple. Especially if it is equipped with an electric ignition. After all, in this case, it is enough just to turn the knob, and then - to press the button to turn on the piez-element.

But the most important thing is to observe safety precautions when using such equipment.
